Build a wooden stool that holds your weight
Real saw, real nails, real wood. By the end of the day, you both sit on it.
How to do it
Buy a 1x10 pine board (8 ft long, $12 at any home improvement store) and a small box of 2-inch wood screws. Sketch a stool together: 12x12 seat, four 4x14 legs, two 2x10 cross-supports. Weekend 1: measure twice, cut once. Mark every line, use a hand saw. Weekend 2: pre-drill every screw hole. Drive screws. Sand it. Weekend 3 (if needed): finish with a wipe-on stain or just leave it raw. They sit on it. You sit on it. It holds. Put it in the kitchen. They use it for years. Carve your initials and the year into the bottom.
