How to do it
Pick the unabridged version. One chapter a night, 30 minutes. Read aloud, trading chapters once they're old enough. The book is long; that's the point — by week 3, the March sisters are family. When Beth gets sick, slow down. When Jo turns down Laurie, talk about it for ten minutes after. The book gives you permission to discuss things you'd never bring up otherwise — money, ambition, marriage, mortality. End the last chapter with a hug. Watch the 2019 movie together a week later.
