How to do it
Get a paperback or library copy. The pact: one chapter every weeknight before bed, 30 minutes. Read out loud. Do the voices — Long John Silver gets a low rasp, Jim Hawkins is high and earnest, the parrot screams. When you hit a word neither of you knows (there will be many — 'hawser,' 'forecastle,' 'doubloons'), pause, look it up together, write it on the kitchen whiteboard. By week 4 you've finished a great novel together. The vocabulary list on the whiteboard becomes its own artifact. Save the book on their shelf.
