Egg drop engineering
Build a contraption to keep an egg unbroken from the top of the stairs.

How to do it
Set the rule: the egg has to survive a drop from the top of the stairs (or off the porch). They get 20 minutes to design and build using only what's on the supplies list and stuff from the recycling bin. Drop it. If it breaks, give them 10 more minutes to redesign. Two failures is a lesson — three is character.
